早 is composed of 日(the sun) and the variant of 甲(first of the ten Heavenly Stems (天干)). Since 甲 is the first of the ten Heavenly Stems (天干), is has the meaning of beginning, so 早 is used to describe the time of a day from sunrise until noon.
