範 is composed of 車 (vehicle) and a simplified form of 笵 (bamboo fence, standard). 笵 refers to a fence made of bamboo, inherently carrying the meaning of boundaries and rules. In ancient times, vehicles traveled along the ruts on roads and could not stray beyond these limits.
