補 is composed of the BuShou of 衣(meat) and 甫(just). 甫 depicts an offspring growing in a field, which has the meaning of supplementing or adding. On the other hand, the productivity of ancient China is still weak, when a clothes is torn, ancient Chinese won’t buy a new one, but mends it instead.
