The story of 道

way, road

道is composed of the BuShou of 辵(depicts a foot walking on a road, means going towards) and首(head). 首 has the meaning of the first or the utmost, human beings are well-behaved, when they walk, they will walk on the road first, so 道 means road, and also means method or a doctrine. On the other hand, 道 also means guiding or conducting, but such meaning has been replaced by 導.
