The story of 尸

corpse

尸 is the picture of a man sitting down with bending knees. During ancient Chinese ancestral sacrifices, people used someone to personate their dead relative, who would eat and drink sacrificial offerings and convey messages from the spirit, such a personator named 尸. On the other hand, 尸 also means corpse, but this meaning has been replaced by 屍.
