在 is composed of the variant of 才(shell) and the variant of 士(scholar, honorific). 才 is the picture of a newborn plant, while 士 depicts an axe, ancient Chinese valued agriculture, they would live in a fertile place which the plants could grow well, and would also guard their property by force.
