萌 is composed of the BuShou of 艸(grass) and明(light, bright). Plant grows toward sunlight, especially the sprout, so萌 means sprout or germ, thus generates the meaning of beginning. Perhaps the babies of creatures are small and lovely, 萌 is used to describe someone or something lovely in Japanese.
