The story of 如

as if

如 is composed of女(woman) and口(mouth). Ancient Chinese women care their own manners, they eat slowly and won’t open their mouths too wide, but such meaning has been replaced by 茹. Now 如 only means ‘as if’ or ‘such as’, woman sips, it looks like nothing being eaten.
