豎 is composed of 臤(worthy, firm) and 豆(sacrificial vessel, bean). 臤 depicts someone staring at something while grabbing it at the same time, 豆 is the picture of sacrificial vessel, such a vessel is wide in the top and bottom but thin in the neck, looks like a man standing upright. if you want to stand vertically, your feet need to be firm.
