The story of 龹

grain

龹 depicts two hands holding a stalk of grain. 龹 is not an independent HanZi, it only exists in the combination form of the other HanZi, and also, neither Oracle Script(甲骨文) nor Bronze Script(金文) of 龹 is found, so it is hard to tell its origin. However, from the Seal Script(小篆) of 卷, which is derived from 龹, we know that 龹 is the picture of threshing. From the shape of Seal Script, we learn that 龹 is composed of 釆 and two 手(hands). 釆 is the picture of a ripe stalk of grain, ancient Chinese use machine to separate the grains from stalks, while the machine has wheel inside, so 龹 has the meaning of rolling or turning around. On the other hand, 龹 also means winnowing, the chaff which is separated from grains can be used to feed pigs, generate 豢.
