衹 is composed of the BuShou of 示(the picture of an altar) and 氏(surname, clan name). 氏 depicts a bowing man holding a frame, the frame means enclosing a piece of land, implies someone obtaining a piece of land. Earth spirit(god) is the owner of the land, who deserves sacrifices offered on the altar.
