gather, assemble

聚 is composed of 取(to get, to take) and the variant of 众(crowd). 取 depicts an ear being picked by a hand, it is the picture of soldiers cutting the ears of the captives as their trophies, while 众 has the meaning of assembling or gathering, with a view to getting reward, soldiers will kill more enemies and collect more ears.
