廉 is composed of the BuShou of 广(the picture of a big house) and 兼(the picture of a hand holding two standing grains, means concurrent,). 廉 depicts two standing grains being stored in a warehouse, the harvest is great so the price is low, so 廉 is used to describe something in low price or someone frugal. On the other hand, when a government official is frugal in his life, it means he is honest and not greedy.
