The story of 罔

deceive, none

罔 is composed of the variant of 网(net) with 亡(to escape or die, depicts a man being chased to the corner) inside, represents a fugutive gets caught by a net. When a fugutive gets caught by a net, there is no way for him to escape, so 罔 means 'nothing'. On the other hand, net is a kind of trap, a device to deceive someone to get caught, so 罔 also means 'deception' or 'to entrap'. 罔 meant net in the past, but such meaning was then replaced by 網.
