Ancient Chinese carved some characters on the a pieces of bone or turtle plastron, then got it heated and cracked, and learned the answer to the divination from the shape of the crackle. Also, the pronunciation of 卜(Putonghua:bu3, Cantonese:buk1) is similar to the sound of cracking of tortoiseshell.
