咸 is composed of 戌 (11th earthly branch) and 口 (mouth). 戌 is the picture of a spear like weapon, while 口 is the picture of a mouth, so 咸 depicts a mouth being attacked by a weapon. When a person is silenced, it is equivalent to being deprived of everything, which also extends to the meaning of all or everything.
